Missions

The Mission's supported by Wesley UMC range from local community rebuilding, to regional efforts, and as far reaching as international spiritual and financial support.  The entire church has a desire for people to meet and have a relationship with Christ.  The support of missions and evangelism is evidence of that.

The Angel Tree Project has helped over 5 million children since 1982.  Those children have one or more parent in prison - with little or no way to provide even a small Christmas each year.  Wesley UMC Seaford has been an Angel Tree supporter for many years.  This year (2006) was no exception.  As this project wraps up for another Christmas holiday, please watch this presentation to learn more about the program you have been supporting.  And thank you, from all of those who were touched by your gifts.

Betel Hispanic Mission Church
Written by Bonnie Kendall
Betel is a little mission church in Georgetown that holds services in a sparsely remodeled warehouse. Their minister is Rene Knight originally from the Dominican Republic. The congregation's goals include doing more community outreach, growing their congregation from 70 to 100 members and to become financially independent. The Hispanic Mission Taskforce, in which Wesley UMC participates, provides both financial and promotional support. The Task Force depends on continuous contributions from churches and individuals. Currently less than 15 of 108 churches in the District contribute regularly to the Task Force. The Task Force helps to raise money by conducting Chili Luncheons at various churches. Come out Sunday evening at 6:00 p.m. to worship God with our Hispanic brothers and sisters in Christ! Dios te bendiga!

A CROP Walk was held in the Fall of 2004 after several years of being dormant in our area. Members of our congregation pledge to walk 3 miles, identifying with people in other lands who must walk at least that distance every day for food or clean water. Sponsors support walkers with donations. All money raised is distributed worldwide (75%) and locally (25%) through Church World Service. Walkers, sponsors, and a coordinator for this yearly event are needed.

Glasses for Masses
Written by Bonnie Kendall

Glasses for the Masses (GFM) was formed in 1985 by Fairview UMC as a mission to supply eye glasses to Mark Waltz in Paraguay. Glasses are distributed to over 30 missions throughout the world. There is an on-hand supply of over twenty-thousand pairs of glasses. They also help missions by loaning a vision instrument called a Focometer. God brought them enough donors so they could purchase seven of these from InFocus I Houston, TX. There are three of these machines available to loan for short term missions. The following countries have been served by this outreach: Bolivia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Cuba, Estonia, Guatemala, Honduras, Kenya, Liberia, Ukraine, and Venezuela. Wesley will conduct a glasses collection about every two years to send to Fairview UMC.

If you are interested in coordinating this outreach, please contact Bonnie Kendall.

Hope for the Children of Africa PDF Print E-mail
Hope for the Children of Africa
Written by Bonnie Kendall

The needs of children in Africa are tremendous. They need help in locating their parents, who have become victims of land mines and other explosive objects.  Children with handicapping conditions have been abandoned. Children have been sold into prostitution, which leads to pregnancies, abortions, infections and often death. Children as young as 10 have been conscripted into the army. They are taken from their homes, desensitized, trained to kill and fight the battles of adults.

Wesley is currently supporting this mission effort financially.

It is a proven fact that more money is collected in Salvation Army kettles which are manned with a bell ringer than those that are not. Can't you spare 2 hours during the holiday season to ring a bell and greet shoppers as they enter a store? If you are interested in doing your part to "ring" in the holidays, please sign up to be a bell ringer with the Salvation Army.

The Seaford Mission regularly attends Wesley UMC Prayer Breakfasts.  The Mission is active in moving broken men into a repaired relationship with God.  The Mission accomplishes this task through a disciplined live-in program and rigorous Bible teaching.  The leadership of Mr. Paul Alexander has been key to the success of healing the lives of many men.  The Mission is supported by many local churches, and Wesley UMC is encouraged by the results of their support.

Help is needed to assist current teams who cook and serve. Please contact Doris Cummings at 629-4182 if you are interested in helping.

We are also looking for someone to attend the Advisory Board/Executive Board meetings the 1st Monday of each month from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Shiloh House of Hope
Written by Bonnie Kendall

Shiloh House of Hope, Inc. is a non-denominational, not-for-profit residential program for teens located on a beautiful piece of farmland in Southern Delaware. The program is modeled after the National House of Hope in Orlando, Florida. This non-denominational, not-for-profit residential program for teens is located on beautiful farmland in Southern Delaware that Lori Rider, Vice-President, generously donated to the site of Shiloh House of Hope.

Shiloh House of Hope is a safe haven where hurting teens are given a hope and a future. Through a Christ-centered, loving environment, teens will receive counseling and education that will bring about healing and restoration to them and their families.

The landscape of our nation is scattered with broken lives shattered by the destructive affects of child abuse, sexual abuse, drug abuse, self-mutiliation and more. Shiloh will provide a place where young boys and girls ages 13-18 can come and receive help for their hurting lives. Life coaches and counselors will be available, on-site, to offer assistance and guidance in the healing and restoration process.
